How to Prepare for your First Skating Lesson

  1. Clothing: New skaters need to be fully dressed in winter wear.  This includes a snow suit and waterproof gloves.  In the fall, you may want a lighter shirt under the jacket as the arena is a little warmer.

  2. Skates: Skates must be laced with uniform tightness from toe to ankle.  Do not skip any eyelets especially at the ankle.  Also, do not wrap laces around the ankle as it inhibits ankle movement. Please ensure that skates have been sharpened prior to first us. Purchase good quality skates – used are fine as long as the fit is good.

  3. Helmet: All helmets must be a CSA approved hockey style helmet with a full face mask. Used helmets are not recommended.

It is a good idea to prepare new skaters for the fact that their parents will not be on the ice with them.   The separation can cause anxiety and a little preparation can go a long way.  It also helps to try on the helmet and skates so that your skater will be used to the feel of this equipment.  If you have carpet in your home, cover the skate blades with green painters’ tape and let your skater walk around in the skates on carpet.

When you arrive at the arena, make your way to the small rink on the west side of the building.  Check in with the Premier attendant who will put a name sticker on the helmet and take attendance.  You must check in each subsequent week for attendance and contact tracing.  Find a spot in the small rink lobby area to get dressed and remain in that spot until we are ready to enter the ice surface.

We look forward to meeting you and your skater at your first lesson!
